OPNsense brings native Tailscale Support ready for 2025

For over two years, I’ve seen numerous requests for Tailscale integration in OPNsense. I understand that Tailscale has publicly stated their willingness to contract developers for plugins in both OPNsense and pfSense. However, as far as I know, the pfSense plugin was developed entirely by Christian McDonald from Netgate on his own initiative, without any direct support or compensation from Tailscale.

Similarly, I reached out to Tailscale regarding my work on the OPNsense plugin. Their response was that they cannot officially endorse or support any community-developed plugins, including those developed in response to their public statements.

While I understand their position, I believe it’s important to acknowledge the significant effort and time invested by community members like myself to bring these valuable integrations to the OPNsense ecosystem.

I hope this information provides some context regarding the development of these plugins and encourages open communication and collaboration between the community and companies like Tailscale in the future.

If you have queries or feedback with the OPNsense Tailscale plugin, I welcome your input. Here’s the video prior to OPNsense officially including the plugin, which I’m proud to announce it’s now part of the latest OPNsense (community edition) release.
